Attendance Policy

The Federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that states, school districts and schools be held accountable for ensuring that all students meet high academic standards.  On time, daily attendance is a critical component of this educational process.  New Mexico law dictates that:

  • Students between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18) years of age are mandated to attend public school, private school home school or a state institution.
  • The Albuquerque Public School District reports habitual truants to the Children's Court Liaison office and to the State of New Mexico.

  • APS students are allowed no more than five (5) unexcused absences per semester, and no more than ten (10) unexcused absences per year.
  • The parent/guardian must notify the school each day that the student will be absent, in accordance with the notification procedure established by the school.  The phone number is 296-9536.  You can leave a message on the answering machine at any time.
  • Absences may be excused for the following reasons, with appropriate documentation:
  1. Doctor's appointment
  2. Death in the family
  3. Religious commitment
  4. Illness
  5. Family emergency
  6. Diagnostic testing
  7. School or College visit
  • In the event that the school has not received notification of absence by a parent, the school will make an attempt to contact the parent or guardian.
  • Excessive excused absences may result in further inquiry from the principal and request for additional documentation.  The following guidelines apply.
    • Two (2) unexcused absences - a letter will be mailed home
    • Four (4) unexcused absences - a phone call from the school
    • Five (5) unexcused absences - parent must attend a truancy program
    • Seven (7) unexcused absences - parent must meet with the principal
    • Further unexcused absences will result in referral to the Children's Court Liaison.
  • Family vacations are considered unexcused absences, and it is expected that parents will schedule vacations during periods of time when school is not in session.
  • Students who are signed out before the end of the instructional day must have written documentation of the reason (as defined under excused absences) or be subject to the same consequences as tardy.

If your child will be absent, please call the school by 9:00 am.  After that time, a parent volunteer will attempt to call you to report the absence.  As a general rule, makeup work will be given when a student returns to school.  If a student is absent for a total of seven (7) non-consecutive days, the principal will contact the parent to discuss the matter.  Absences of more than ten (10) days will be reported to the Children's Court Liaison.

It is also important for your child to arrive at school on time.  Announcements are made at the start of the school day.  Teachers give important information about the day at this time, while helping students to focus their energy on learning.  We understand that emergencies occasionally cause your child to be late.  If that happens, please follow our School Instructional Council's policy and accompany your child to the Front Office to sign him or her in.  We will issue a pass to admit the child to class.

For your child's safety, students will be released during school hours only to a parent or guardian or to the person designated on the enrollment card.  Please come to the office to sign out your child, as children may only be released from the Front Office and not from the classroom.  The person picking up the child should be prepared to show identification when asked.  If you have signed your child out and are returning him or her to school, please sign in at the Front Office before your child goes back to class.

In the event that your child becomes ill at school and needs to leave, the Health Room attendant will contact the parent or guardian or emergency contacts listed on the Health Card.   It is very important to update the information on the enrollment and health cards so that we can contact you if necessary.  This issue could be vital to your child's health.
