What Allie’s teacher says about her: Allie is a hardworking student. She puts in 100-percent effort in all that she does. She is very kind to her friends and goes out of her way to help others. Allie likes being at school and getting to be with her friends and helping her teacher, too. She always has a great big smile on her face.

Jenny's Penguin Patch® Holiday Shop is conning to our school! Next week your child will be able to participate in an educational, fun, and exciting experience. 

 

Parent volunteers will assist children while shopping to allow them to enjoy the spirit of giving. We offer over 100 different gifts that can be purchased for as little^as $.25 and up to $10.00 each. The gift items offered are Kid Tested Mom Approved . This is sure to be one of the most exciting events that your child will participate in this year!

 

Please ensure that the Gift List Budget Envelope is completed and returned (with cash or check) to the school on the date that your child's class is scheduled to shop. Don't let your child miss this opportunity to grow and experience the spirit of giving!

 

Shop Open: Dec. 4th -Dec. 8th (9am-12:30pm and 2:00pm-3:00pm)

Parents, November's Restaurant Night is around age corner! Come on by on Tuesday, November 14 from 5:00-9:00pm. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to ADO.  If your student was recognized for being on time or for having zero absences during this grading period, they were awarded a coupon from Golden Corral (Congratulations!!!)  The students will be able to use the coupon during the Restaurant Night event.

Notices went home with students requesting families to RSVP if they plan to attend.  Adult meals are $5, and student meals will be $3.70.   We must have a good count of attendees to ensure we order enough turkey!  Please let us know if you and your family plan to join us.  As you all know, we have limited parking space on campus.  If possible, please walk to ADO, but if you do drive, please be courteous to our neighbors and do not block (or park in) their driveways.

We are requiring students to use solar filter glasses or pinhole cameras to view the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. 

 

While eclipse viewing is an exciting and engaging activity for students, it is important to remember that serious eye damage can happen by looking directly at the sun at any time, even during a total eclipse.Teachers and school staff need to be aware of the dangers that surround viewing an eclipse and follow safety guidelines.

The eclipse will begin in Albuquerque on Monday, Aug. 21, at 10:21 a.m. It will peak at 11:45 a.m. and finish at 1:13 p.m. Between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., about 74 percent of the sun's surface will be obscured by the moon’s shadow.

If your child has never attended an APS school before, you need to enroll him or her using the process outlined below.

Note: You do not have to re-enroll your students when they transition from elementary to middle school, or from middle school to high school — their current school will register them at their new school.

 

Here's how to enroll your child in classes at APS for the first time:

STEP 1: Meet Requirements for Enrollment

Age requirements:

  • Kindergarten: the student must be 5 years old by 12:01 a.m. on September 1
  • First grade: the student must be 6 years old by 12:01 a.m. on September 1
  • Preschool: Some students under 5 years old may be eligible to enroll in pre-kindergarten programs provided by APS or the City of Albuquerque.

Students are assigned to a school based on the address where they live. To find out what schools are in your attendance area:

If you want your child to attend a school other than the one you're assigned to, you can fill out a Transfer Request.

STEP 3: Contact Your School

Once you've confirmed that your child meets enrollment requirements, and identified your designated school, contact the school to complete the enrollment process.

Dear Families,

 

We made it to the home stretch!  These next few weeks will fly by as we wrap up a terrific year of learning and celebrate the journey from August to May.  We have many fun activities planned: Park Days, Play Days, Spring Fling, Awards Ceremonies, and even a few more field trips.  Safety is still our number one concern, so please help us support students to make good decisions about behavior and attendance this month.  

 

This first week of May is also Teacher Appreciation Week and boy do we appreciate our hardworking teachers!  If you want to express some thanks for the teachers who have spent the year with your little ones, please know how meaningful a handwritten note or card can be.  Every teacher I've ever met has a little box, drawer, or other special spot where they collect these kinds of notes that they can look back on when having a hard day.  It's free, it's quick, but it means a lot!

 

This is the last newsletter of the year and I want to take a moment to say thank you to our amazing community.  ADO is incredibly lucky to have such a kind, committed group of families, students, and staff.  Please know how much we truly appreciate each and every one of you!

Dear Families,

 

April Fool’s Day and its silliness is the traditional way to kick off the month of April, but I want to get serious.  As a Title I school with 62% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, we recognize that many of our families are struggling with food insecurity.  On a case-by-case basis, we have worked to get food to student homes when we see a need.  We are hoping to expand this service in the future by creating a food pantry for ADO families and we want to get the word out.  If you are a family that can spare some non-perishable food items, please consider sending some donated food with your student.  If you are a family in need, please contact either me; Adelita Otero, the counselor; or any staff member you feel comfortable reaching out to.  This is also a good time to remember that we have other outside resources we can help families find and we are very happy to provide confidential assistance in whatever way we can.  I know it can be hard to ask for help but most of us have been in situations in our life where we needed some support, so there is no judgment and of course, student privacy is always safeguarded.  More details will be forthcoming as we figure out the logistics of setting up this pantry (and if you have any experience with this type of program, we’d love to hear from you!).

We held the grand opening of ADO's little library on April 10, 2017.  The library is dedicated to the memory of former principal, Stephen Maresca and its mission is to provide access to reading materials for our neighborhood even when the school library is closed.  The library is a repurposed Alibi Newspaper machine that was painted by parent Michael Dean.  Books can be borrowed and donated by our community members.  Please stop by and help yourself!

Spring is on its way!  Despite the allergies and the wind, this is my favorite time of year; flowers start blooming, days get longer, and the promise of summer fun is just around the corner.  At this phase of the second semester we find students beginning to catch spring fever so it’s a great time to remember:

  • Attendance is critically important – you can’t learn if you’re not here.
  • Punctuality is also essential to starting the day off right – we need students in their seats by 7:53.
  • Behavioral expectations remain in effect through the last minute of our last day together – we are responsible, respectful, caring, and safe!
  • Communication between home and school is so crucial - check the backpack, review the planner, talk with your child daily.

In the event that APS calls a two our delay, ADO will begin at 9:48. Dismissal is at the regularlly scheduled time, 2:00.

2-Hour Delays: Abbreviated Days

2-hour delays are called when severe weather causes street conditions that would endanger student and school employee safety.

The abbreviated day schedule is a shortened school day that begins 2 hours later than the regular schedule but ends at the regular time. This time schedule also applies on Wednesdays for elementary schools that usually dismiss early.

The following services will be canceled on abbreviated days:

  • Zero hour activities
  • Developmental Pre-school Program (DPP) morning and afternoon classes
  • Career Enrichment Center Classes
